8:24 pm - A Build Your Own Game seminar and more
|

So you want to learn how to write a LARP? Maybe you've been thinking about it, but you didn't want to do it by yourself? Perhaps you just didn't know how to get started? Or, you've written a LARP or three and just want to get a different perspective on the writing process.
Have I got the opportunity for you.
Join me July 20-22, at the Chelmsford Radisson, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. I'll be speaking on Friday about how to write a LARP. On Saturday, I'll be facilitating another Build Your Own Game effort, where a bunch of people will get together to write a game in 24 hours. There will be other panels about LARP as part of the
New England LARP Conference 2012, but the writing is where the challenge will be - so sign up now!
If you don't want to write, we're
looking for proposals for workshops and panels. Let's talk LARP!
current mood: excited

BLOODGAMESA day LARP event (approx 9.30am until around 4/ 5pm) in Torbay, South Devon, with the Brixham Berzerkers. In the remote, little known, island continent of Atbad, in the realm of Shadowlands, a traditional ceremony, which only happens once every hundred years, is about to take place. You may have heard rumour of it and travelled there from curiosity, or you may have travelled there following an advertisement, asking for independent witnesses of the ceremony, who will, after all, be paid well for their time... Hosted by the Brixham Berzerkers LARP club, written by me (second LARP I have written in my life! ) £3 to play, free to crew. Player characters of all levels welcome.
Brixham Berzerkers main LARP group page - https://www.facebook.com/groups/15948905839/ Bloodgames LARP event page - https://www.facebook.com/events/332888903445089/
Feel free to ask questions and I will help as best I can, and if I cant then I will point you towards the club officials. :D.

8:29 pm - What to do about my hair... ????
|

elven_ranger
|
I am about to start LARPing a new character, and I am wondering what to do about my hair.
My character - Adele, daughter of Porthos, and the only girl in the Musketeers (according to our storyline, theres a group of us starting playing musketeers and related characters in our local LARP system...) My main concern is the action LARPs rather than the sedate(er) tavern nights here, where Adele, if off duty, tends to revert to high-fashion of the times (she's a ponce, same as her father!)
Now what I have done (we were asked to show up in costume/character for a charity event a few days ago for a couple of hours) before is to let my hair down and then tie it back with a blue ribbon, for when Adeles "on duty". For day, or two day full action LARPs, this presents me with a problem.
My hair is "African-esque", waist long curls best described as wire wool. Most of the time, unless for a specific theatre/ film event (I do a lot of acting hehe), I keep it in a long plait, because let out, regardless of how much conditioner, or anti-frizz (which latter tends to do the exact opposite!) stuff I put on my hair, it turns into a massive ball of frizz which is also next to impossible to de-tangle after more than a couple of hours have passed. Even tying it back with that blue ribbon wasnt too sucessful in preventing that. Racing about in the open air for hours will mean at least three hours with my head under running water trying to tease the tangles out, and having to cut quite a few out.
However, I am idly wondering (instead of doing coursework for my Masters degree *hides*) if anyone has any suggestions as to hairstyles or adaptations of styles which would let me keep my dishmop under control, but look more of the time-period than my long plait, for when Adele is on-duty. (I am not so bothered about the tavern nights, theres less racing around, and I usually wear it up with a load of fancy frou-frou, if playing Adele at a tavern night, but the frou-frou is impractical for action stuff).
Thanks for any suggestions, my emaciated braincells are failing me on this issue.

Times are still grim in the Known Lands. The devastation that the Walkers left in their wake is still being felt across all the nations. Civil war has almost ceased but the effect of their destructive power is still evident: food is scare, famine and disease reach into villages and towns, and anarchy is still rife in out of the way places. However, very slowly some semblance of normality is creeping into the large cities. The followers of Omaga bring law to the cursed earth and Luthien’s light has started to shine once more on the wretched and the dispossessed. There is a rumour abroad that an avatar of Luthien himself has taken command of the church and is preaching his Lord’s word. Martial law has been declared in Aurea by the Council of Dukes, and a war leader has been elected from within their ranks. Duke Herald has taken a hard line in an effort to stabilize a country ravaged by disease and fearful of invasion. All borders are now closed to non essential travel. The death sentence has been re-introduced and is applied to a wide range of offences from hoarding food up to consorting with demons.
All Menasian nationals and followers of Death, Corruption and Abyss have been advised to leave the country for the duration of the crisis, as the authorities cannot guarantee their safety.
These draconian measures have so far proved effective in maintaining Aurea’s stability, but at the cost of the nation’s liberal nature. It has just turned autumn when news is heard of the chance of work in Aurea, and by default the chance to be fed and have a roof over your head. Mercenaries and freebooters are being drawn to the South Eastern seaboard, and in particular to the foothills of the Granite Mountains. Here, Major Richard Heartwood of the Aurean Provincial army is forming a small but powerful group to assist him in his official duties. Various rumours have been heard as to what it entails – ranging from slaying giants to diving into the watery abyss to search for pearls. All that is known to be true is that the money is good.
Refs: Robin, Rob and Duncan Player places: £55 This is a camping and self catering event. There is no running water but water will be provided by the site. There are portable toilets available for use.
We are pleased to say that Skian Mhor will be bringing a small selection of weapons and props for your buying pleasure so bring some pennies! Crew are always welcome and it is FREE to crew on this event (please note you will still need to bring a tent and food/drink). We are currently somewhat outnumbered by the players so please let us know ASAP if you are up for crewing, even if it is just for one day/afternoon/morning. We welcome all in character tents but there is no problem if you haven’t got one. However we do have a contact who is currently selling 4m and 5m white canvas Sahara bell tents. If interested please email 'enquiries at legion of dreams dot com' and we will get you some prices.
Characters will be sent out a week or so prior to the event.
Taking place at Root n Branch Acres, Old Station Road, Hampton-in-Arden near Solihull, West Midlands RootnBranch Acres is a 15 acre outdoor site incorporating mature woodlands, small glades, new coppice trees, 10 acres of tree-lined fields, stabling, office, storage barns, parking and basic toilet facilities.

3:03 pm - PCs and NPCs needed for Isles June 24th-26th

You are invited to join the opening season of the Second Campaign in the setting of THE ISLES.
A month has passed since the first wave of new citizens arrived from the Empire of Hardestaan in the frontier-town of Purgatory Station. An uneasy balance and truce has been struck between the new townsfolk, the native inhabitants, and the alien Galeesh. Now the festival of Vestalia looms. This is a chance for the townspeople to improve their standing in the eyes of the local community, but what deeper meaning lurks beneath the seemingly innocent festival rites? How are the spirits of the Court of the Sun involved? Will the festival bring them closer to the locals, or drive a spike through their attempts at diplomacy? Join us in The Isles: Purgatory Station.
We are seeking PCs and NPC’s June 24th-June 26th at Ye Olde Commons in Charlton, Mass.

So, just as a litmus test, if a monthly linear style LRP were to start in and around Peterborough UK would there be much interest?
It would have a full and rich game world, a simple and effective combat system and be run by experienced LRPers.
As far as I know there's nothing for miles around, and lots of LRPers within 50 miles or so.

The disastrous Winter is nearly over, although the threat of the Walkers was overcome, the chaos and devastation that lies in their wake is only now being appreciated. Beleaguered communities that scraped through the most severe Winter in (human) living memory now start sending out scouts and messengers to glean what they can of the world at large.
What will be your part in this – helping villages and towns to prepare for the future ?
Hunting down the remaining cultists and also closing what remains of the rift in Mayene ? Or maximising this opportunity for profit?
Word has reached you of one or more of the following offers of employment in these desperate times, either by word of mouth or written notice.
1. The Alchemist Guild of Tyzen is hiring Brave Heroes and Heroines to verify that the Rift at Mayne has been sealed, also to investigate and destroy the remaining cultists that worship the foul Walkers. A representative of the Guild will be at the hamlet of Torzen, present yourselves if you are worthy of such a task. (Previous experience of the Walkers / Cultists / Rift desirable).
2. Here Ye Here Ye. A Bounty Hunter`s Guild has been established to bring to justice (for a suitable price), the legion of foul criminals that the chaos of the Walkers manifestation has allowed free reign until now. Recruiting and also the distribution of duly authorised Omeagan warrants will take place at the hamlet of Torzen. High bounties paid for a selection of criminals, perpetrators usually wanted dead (alive in some cases).
3. Carson Lawrence the Guilds-Master of the Merchants Guild in Tyzen requires stalwart Adventurers for a dangerous, but discreet matter (that`s DISCREET). Apply at the hamlet of Torzen on the border of Ackaran, on the shores of the Inland Sea, this will not be discussed in Tyzen due to the the delicate nature of the assignment.
Arrival at the site – not before 4pm, we will not have access before then.
To book, please visit www.legionofdreams.com/events/7/spring-feast-or-famine
There will be three linked and overlapping plot lines for this event as well as optional individual plot links for characters. Please contact Martin martinmgj@yahoo.com with any requests for the latter. However, any in character options that are available for the player base will be left in their hands, but swift decisions will have to be made before the opportunity is lost (to avoid the frustrations caused in previous games).
Pre-event discussion via LOD threads or private e-mails will be encouraged and multiple minor actions can be carried out as part of the pre-event downtime for this scenario www.legionofdreams.com/community
Start time 8pm Friday evening in a social location (i.e a tavern) for all players that are ready, others will then be introduced as they arrive. Time-ish from 2am to 9am. The Saturday activities will start from appx 10:30am and will finish late, appx 1am on the Saturday night / Sunday morning. Spring – Feast or Famine is a Low-Epic level adventure Power award = 1.5-3.0. Player places: £75
For this event a fully catered option is available for both players and crew, at an extra charge of £10 for the weekend. This will include dinner Friday night, breakfast, lunch and dinner Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. Please make sure LoD are aware of any dietary restrictions you might have. If you want to cater for yourself, that is absolutely fine, but please note there will be no access to the kitchen to cook your own food for health, safety and hygiene reasons, however two microwaves and a kettle will be available in the dining room for self catered options.

Author's Note: x-posted on RPG.net's LARP forum
Given that I'm fairly sure of a difficult decision, I've started to collect some logistical information to begin the preliminary itinerary planning.
The itinerary in particular is focused on a tour of the American LARP "scene".
A few minor caveats regarding the itinerary:- Focus is on gatherings / conventions with a fair number of attendees*
- A Diverse number of systems/games happening**
- Diversity of Genres are a bonus
*An event with 5 to 15 people isn't a gathering, it's a dinner party. I said "gathering" **I'm systems-agnostic, so I'm not an adherent of any particular group or fan-base.
I have received the following suggestions (which skew toward the Theatre-Style):- Intercon New England
- Intercon Mid-Atlantic
- WyrdCon
- Brandeis' Festival of the LARPs
- WPI's SFS Weekend
- Origins
- DragonCon
- NorWesCon
- GameStorm
- ConQuest 42
- Dragonflight
Any other suggestions of events, gatherings, or conventions that should be considered?

Following the success of last year's convention and academic program we're preparing for this year's convention. Just like last year, in addition to various games and events there is an academic portion featuring various interactive theater theorists, critics, craftsman and designers who will explain their art and demonstrate their creations in both interactive panels and hands-on workshops. As a part of this event we're again soliciting for articles for a PDF book that we'll be putting out in conjunction with this academic portion. This PDF book will be comprised of articles, essays and other written works revolving around the summit's theme "Convergence of Interactive Theater."
Interactive Theater is the concept where the audience and actors are both part of the performance and are commonly one and the same. Activities such as Live Action Role Playing, also known as LARP, is one such theater concept having been around for decades. Others such as ARGs (also known as Alternate Reality Games) or even Live Simulations are also included in this definition.
Article authors are welcome from all styles and genres of interactive theater, both veteran and new individuals and no matter where they live. We want to capture interactive theater in as many of its different forms as we can. If you are interested in contributing to this publication please have your article in no later than April 20, 2010. All contributors who have their articles published will be sent a copy of the PDF whether they attend the convention or not and before it's released to the general public post convention via the web.
If you want more information on WyrdCon or want to find out how to participate as a summit panelist/presenter please contact the convention organizers here: http://wyrdcon.com/wp/contact-us/.
If you'd like to see what last year's book looked like, you can download a copy here: http://www.mortalisrpg.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=6.
Submission Guidelines can be found here: http://wyrdcon.com/wp/vendors-designers/academic-submissions/. There have been some minor changes in the guidelines from last year.
Submission Deadline: April 20, 2011
Please send your submissions, questions or other summit book related inquiries to summit@mortalisrpg.com.
Thanks, - Amber E. Summit book editor
